Why You'll Love This Recipe:

  • The flavours of this bread is similar to spanakopita, which is a Greek appetiser filled with feta and spinach.
  • This bread would also be perfect to serve at a party or a barbecue.

Ingredients In This Recipe

You can find a printable version of this recipe below. It has a complete list of ingredients with exact amounts and easy-to-follow instructions to help you make it step by step.

For The Dough

Oil – I used a light flavoured olive oil, if you don’t have it use another neutral flavoured oil, like vegetable oil.

Greek Feta Cheese – A small quantity of crumbled feta cheese is worked into the dough, which will carry the flavours from the dough to the filling.

Egg – One egg is used to add richness to the dough.

Salt – Use the amount stated in the recipe. Don’t be tempted to add more, because, it will become too salty when combined with the feta cheese.

Bread Flour – I used bread flour (also known as strong flour or bakers’ flour), if you don’t have this plain flour (all purpose flour) could also be used.

Water – Use lukewarm water or cold tap water. Weigh it for accuracy rather than using cup measures.

Instant Dried Yeast – Instant dried yeast can be added in with the rest of the ingredients without being activated. However, if you have any doubts as to the freshness of the yeast, activate it before making the recipe.

Not sure how to active yeast, read my article on “How To Use Instant Yeast”.

Spinach Feta Filling

Spinach – I used frozen spinach for this recipe. Allow it to thaw completely, then use your hands to squeeze out as much liquid as you can.

After squeezing, use your fingers to loosen the spinach. If the spinach pieces look large, chop them into smaller pieces. This will make it easier to spread over the dough later.

Garlic – Fresh or bottled garlic can be used. If using fresh garlic, grate it, if using bottled use 1 teaspoon. If you don’t like garlic leave it out.

Butter – A little melted butter is used just for added flavour and to give the filling a little moisture.

Cheese – Two cheeses are used in the filling grated parmesan cheese and crumbled feta cheese. These are both for flavour and texture.

Herbs – Using herbs is optional. I used dry oregano; however, another dried or fresh herb can be used.

The Topping

• Egg White – Beaten egg white is brushed over the top of the dough.

Extra Parmesan Cheese – just because I like a cheese topping on my bread.

Step By Step Instructions

Making The Dough

Put all the dough ingredients into your bread maker, in the order specified in the instructions for your machine.

Set the bread machine to the dough setting, press start and allow the dough cycle to finish.

When the dough cycle has finished, remove the dough from the machine and place it on a lightly floured surface. Then follow the instructions listed below (under the heading "Putting It Together")

Make The Filling

While the dough is kneading, prepare the filling. Combine all the filling ingredients (except the feta cheese) into a small bowl and mix well. Put aside for later.

Step 9 - Once you have finished twisting the dough pinch the other two ends together.

Step 10 - Transfer the bread to a baking tray lined with baking paper. Because, the bread twist is long, it might have stretched a little when you transferred it to the tray. If this is the case, just ease it back into shape when you have it on the tray.

FAQs

What is the best order to put ingredients in a bread machine? ›

You add the ingredients, and the bread machine makes and bakes the bread in one handy appliance. Liquid ingredients are added first, then oils or fats, dry ingredients, and finally yeast (if your recipe calls for it). The machine will mix, knead, rise, and bake the dough to a beautifully soft bread with a crisp crust.

What kind of flour do you use in a bread machine? ›

Most bread machine manuals and cookbooks call for bread flour rather than all-purpose flour. King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour, because it's higher in gluten than national brands of all-purpose flour, works perfectly in the bread machine.

How do I get my bread machine bread to rise more? ›

Move the dough (either in the bread machine pan or to another bowl) to a warmer location. This might hasten the rising process.

Which yeast is best for bread machine? ›

Instant yeast is perfect for a bread machine because it dissolves “instantly.” That means you can dump the fine, dry yeast granules and the other ingredients into the bread machine without dissolving them first.

Is it cheaper to buy bread or make it in a bread machine? ›

Making bread from a machine is marginally cheaper than buying it, as long as you eat bread frequently enough to offset the cost of the appliance. Specifically, I see this as an investment that's smart for households that go through bread quickly, like large families or homes with multiple roommates.

What ingredient in bread most commonly results in the rising process? ›

Once reactivated, yeast begins feeding on the sugars in flour, and releases the carbon dioxide that makes bread rise (although at a much slower rate than baking powder or soda). Yeast also adds many of the distinctive flavors and aromas we associate with bread.

What is one drawback of using a bread machine? ›

One disadvantage of using a bread maker as opposed to your hands is that the paddles are typically fixed, meaning they remain in the dough when baking, often leaving a hole in the middle of the loaf. Whilst this is not the biggest hinderance, it can be an annoyance to those who aim for gold standard loaves.

Can I use all-purpose flour instead of bread flour in bread machine? ›

Yes! All-purpose flour has a 9% to 12% gluten content, while bread flour's gluten content falls in the 10% to 13% range. Even if your all-purpose flour lacks gluten, you can still use it in the bread machine. Again, the worst that will happen is that your bread will not rise as much as it would with bread flour.

Why is my homemade bread so dense in my bread machine? ›

Too much heat or humidity might lead to a too-quick rise and a crevice near the center of your bread. Conditions that are too cold might delay proofing or rising, resulting in a super-dense loaf.

Why does my bread go flat in my bread machine? ›

The recipe you're using may include too much yeast, or the machine may be proofing the bread at too high a temperature, causing the loaf to be over-proofed before the baking cycle begins. Try reducing the amount of yeast by half and see what happens.

What happens if you use too much yeast in bread maker? ›

If you add too much yeast this process will be very fast and your dough will not be as good. It will lack in flavor and you risk a flat bread because the structure of your dough won't be as stable.

Should you remove bread from bread machine immediately? ›

Condensation can build up in a bread machine if it is not opened at the end of the baking program. If a loaf is left in the machine after baking it can absorb the moisture from the condensation and become soggy. For future bakes, remove the loaf at the end of the baking cycle.

Can you use Fleischmann's yeast in bread machine? ›

“What is the difference between Instant Yeast, Bread Machine Yeast and RapidRise® Instant Yeast?” Mainly names, but these are all the same yeast! Use interchangeably.

What is the best flour for bread? ›

While bread flour is the best option, it can sometimes be used if you don't have bread flour. “Check the protein content,” advises Chef Jürgen, since it can vary from brand to brand, and an all-purpose flour that contains protein on the higher end of the range, 12 to 13 percent, will produce a better outcome.

Can I use active dry yeast instead of instant yeast in bread machine? ›

Both commercial dry yeast and instant yeast are suitable for bread machines because they are designed to be added directly to the dry ingredients, and they don't require proofing in water before use.

Do you put liquids or solids first in bread machine? ›

To create a loaf of bread, ingredients are measured into the bread pan in a specified order (usually liquids first, with solid ingredients layered on top) and the pan is then placed in the breadmaker.

Do you put water or flour in breadmaker first? ›

By putting the yeast in first and the water in after the flour, this ensures that the yeast does not become active too soon. The flour is acting as a barrier.

In what order do you put ingredients in a Panasonic bread machine? ›

In the Panasonic, the yeast goes in first, then the dry ingredients and then you pour the water into the side of the pan.

What order do you put ingredients in a Panasonic bread maker? ›

If your breadmaker has a yeast dispenser (SD-YR2550, SD-YR2540), add the yeast there. If your breadmaker has no yeast dispenser, add the yeast into your bread pan first. Then add all remaining ingredients (top-to-bottom order) into your bread pan.
